OVERVIEW
Research technician in a developmental biology lab performing standard
and recurring biochemistry and analytical chemistry techniques.
Under technical supervision of project scientist and PI, will
assist with research on proteomics and proteogenomics.
Duties include but are not limited to: extract and digest
proteins from various Maize tissue samples for nanoLC-MS/MS
analysis, make micro-HPLC columns, prepare solvents for HPLC
systems, maintain records of samples, backup mass spectrometry
data, launch protein database search jobs, monitoring lab
expenditures, assisting with standard & routine genetic,
biochemistry and molecular biology procedures, maintenance and
upkeep of the lab, preparation of buffers, generally assisting
with lab organization, etc.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must be willing and able to work safely with hazardous materials.
Occasional evening and weekend work as required by experimental
protocols.

1. Prepare protein samples for mass
spectrometry:
a. Extract proteins form plant tissue
samples and cells.
b. Characterize protein extracts by 1D Gel
and protein assays.
c. Digest proteins by proteases.
d. Isotope labeling of peptides and
enrichment of phosphopeptides.
2. Maintain LC-MS instruments:
a. Prepare LC solvents.
b. Make micro- HPLC columns.
c. Load samples.
d. Setup sequence files and start mass
spectrometers.
e. Clean mass spectrometers and change pump
oils.
3. Maintain data for analysis
a. Back up and keep records of mass
spectrometry data.
b. Launch protein database searches.
c. Assist with implementing and designing
web based tools for analyzing mass spec
data.
d. Use Microsoft Excel for quantitative
analysis of proteins.
4. Perform other research support duties as
assigned.

1. Actively participate in day-to-day
laboratory administration:
a. Collaborative maintenance of laboratory
common areas ensuring that laboratory spaces
are clean, safe and orderly.
b. General maintenance of laboratory and
office equipment as well as obtaining
necessary repairs.
c. Monitor and prepare & order laboratory
supplies, chemical stocks, and common stock
solutions.
d. Participate in training of purchasing
procedures.
e. Perform laboratory related errands such
as picking up supplies from office supply
and/or hardware stores.
f. Attend and participate in laboratory
meetings to understand experimental methods
and strategies.
e. Present data and ideas at lab meetings.
2. Assist Lab Safety Coordinator:
a. Participate in laboratory safety
communication about laboratory rules,
Cal-OSHA and EH&S safety requirements and
remind lab members to attend safety training
programs.
b. Check lab periodically for hazardous
conditions and eliminate them.
c. Maintain required safety supplies and
post safety information.
e. Provide collaborative maintenance of
laboratory common areas, ensuring that
laboratory spaces are clean safe and
orderly.
3. Engage in other laboratory maintenance
and safety duties as assigned. |
