According to localcollegeexplorer,Zimbabwe is a country located in the southern African region, bordered by Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique. Its history dates back to the 11th century when it was inhabited by various Bantu speaking tribes such as the Shona and Ndebele people. During this time, the area was divided into many small kingdoms and chiefdoms which were ruled by local chiefs until 1889 when it became a British colony known as Southern Rhodesia. The British brought with them a system of racial segregation known as “apartheid” which saw white settlers enjoy better access to resources than their black counterparts. This sparked an uprising in 1965 led by Robert Mugabe who sought to overthrow the white minority rule. After a long struggle, Zimbabwe gained its independence in 1980 with Mugabe becoming its first president. During this period, Zimbabwe experienced significant economic growth due to its rich natural resources such as gold and diamonds. However, this growth was not sustained due to political instability and poor economic policies while Mugabe was in power leading to hyperinflation and an increase in poverty levels from 35% in 1980 to 70% in 1999. In 2000, Mugabe lost the presidential election to Morgan Tsvangirai but refused to step down leading to a period of political unrest which lasted until 2008 when Tsvangirai formed a unity government with Mugabe remaining as president. This government implemented various economic reforms including land reform which saw thousands of acres of farmland redistributed from white farmers to black Zimbabweans. Since then, Zimbabwe has faced numerous challenges including high unemployment levels (estimated at around 90%) as well as rising inequality due to an inadequate tax system which fails to capture wealth from wealthy individuals or corporations operating within its borders. Additionally, climate change has had a major impact on Zimbabwean agriculture with crop yields declining due to increasingly frequent droughts and floods leading to food insecurity for many citizens. Zimbabwe in 2010 was a landlocked country located in southern Africa, bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia. It had a total area of 390,757 square kilometers and was home to around 13 million people. The official language was English, although Shona and Ndebele were also spoken. The economy of Zimbabwe in 2010 was largely based on agriculture; the country was one of the top producers of maize, cotton, tobacco and sugar in Africa. Other industries included manufacturing, tourism and services. Despite its wealth however much of the population still lived in poverty due to high levels of income inequality and corruption within the government. In 2010 Zimbabwe was still ruled by President Robert Mugabe who had been in power since 1980. His government faced criticism for its lack of democracy and allegations of human rights abuses. Despite this challenging environment civil society organizations were beginning to emerge to advocate for greater freedoms and human rights protections within the country. The government also continued to promote regional cooperation through initiatives such as Southern African Development Community (SADC) which allowed countries with limited access to foreign markets to purchase goods from Zimbabwe at discounted prices. Population, society and rights Since the country has achieved independence, the composition of the population has significantly changed due to the various migratory waves that have followed one another. Of the 275,000 whites who resided in the country before the land reform, only a few thousand remain, with negative consequences on skilled human resources and in terms of expertise both in the agricultural field and in the manufacturing sector. Violent clashes between black state-backed occupants of farmland and often persecuted…
