According to localcollegeexplorer, Yemen is a country located in the Middle East, on the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. It has a long and complex history, dating back to ancient times when it was part of the Sabaean Kingdom. During this period, Yemen was an important trading hub and home to some of the world’s most sophisticated civilizations. In 115 BC, Yemen was conquered by Rome and remained under its control until 628 CE when it became part of the Islamic Empire. During this time, Yemen flourished as a major center of Islamic learning and culture with its capital city Sanaa becoming an important cultural hub. In 1839, Yemen fell under Ottoman rule until 1918 when it came under British control following World War I. The British then divided the country into two parts: North Yemen and South Yemen with each side having its own government led by Imam Yahya (in North Yemen) and Imam Muhammad al-Badr (in South Yemen). In 1962, a civil war broke out between North and South Yemen which lasted until 1970 when they were unified into one state known as The Republic of Yemen with Ali Abdullah Saleh as president. This period saw great economic growth as oil reserves were discovered in the country which provided much needed revenue for infrastructure development. However, in 2011 civil unrest erupted in response to President Saleh’s authoritarian rule leading to his eventual resignation in 2012. This period saw an escalation in violence between various factions including Houthi rebels which resulted in a humanitarian crisis with over 22 million people now requiring aid due to widespread food shortages and displacement. Despite these issues however, there is still hope for peace as various peace talks have been held between warring factions since 2015 although progress has been slow due to ongoing fighting throughout the country. Yemen in 2010 was an Arab nation located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It was home to around 24 million people and had a total area of 527,970 square kilometers. The official language was Arabic, and several other languages were also spoken. The economy of Yemen in 2010 was largely based on agriculture; the country was one of the top producers of coffee, fruits, and vegetables in the world. Other industries included manufacturing, tourism, and services. Despite its wealth, however, much of the population still lived in poverty due to high levels of income inequality and corruption within the government. In 2010, Yemen was still ruled by President Ali Abdullah Saleh who had been in power since 1990. His government faced criticism for its lack of democracy and allegations of human rights abuses. Despite this challenging environment, civil society organizations were beginning to emerge to advocate for greater freedoms and human rights protections within the country. The government also continued to promote regional cooperation through initiatives such as Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) which allowed countries with limited access to foreign markets to purchase goods from Yemen at discounted prices.
