It has a long and complex history stretching back to its earliest known inhabitants, the Red River Civilization, which dates back to around 500 BCE. By 111 BCE, the Chinese had conquered Vietnam and it soon became part of their vast empire. This period saw great cultural exchange between the two nations as Chinese culture was adopted by Vietnamese people. However, in 938 CE, Vietnam declared independence from China and established its own independent kingdom known as Dai Viet. In 1858, Vietnam was colonized by France and it remained under French control until 1945 when Japan seized power during World War II. In 1954, France relinquished control of its Indochina colonies which resulted in Vietnam being divided into North and South Vietnam with each side having its own government led by Ho Chi Minh in the north and Ngo Dinh Diem in the south. In 1965, US forces began to intervene on behalf of South Vietnam which sparked a long and bloody conflict known as The Vietnam War that lasted until 1975 when North Vietnamese forces captured Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City). Following this period of conflict, reunification occurred as North and South Vietnam were merged into one nation-state under Communist rule with Ho Chi Minh as president. Since then, Vietnam has experienced rapid economic growth due to its strategic location between China and Southeast Asia as well as its large population base. In addition to this, it has become increasingly active in international affairs with President Tran Dai Quang taking part in various global initiatives such as climate change and human rights advocacy. Vietnam in 2010 was a Southeast Asian nation located on the eastern coast of the Indochina Peninsula. It was home to around 87 million people and had a total area of 331,210 square kilometers. The official language was Vietnamese, and several other languages were also spoken. The economy of Vietnam in 2010 was largely based on agriculture; the country was one of the top producers of coffee, rice, and rubber in the world. Other industries included manufacturing, tourism, and services. Despite its wealth, however, much of the population still lived in poverty due to high levels of income inequality and corruption within the government. In 2010, Vietnam was still ruled by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung who had been in power since 2006. His government faced criticism for its lack of democracy and allegations of human rights abuses. Despite this challenging environment, civil society organizations were beginning to emerge to advocate for greater freedoms and human rights protections within the country. The government also continued to promote regional cooperation through initiatives such as ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) which allowed countries with limited access to foreign markets to purchase goods from Vietnam at discounted prices.
