In order to address these issues, Vanuatu has implemented various social programs such as free healthcare services and improved access to education. It has also joined regional organizations such as Melanesian Spearhead Group in order to promote regional trade and cooperation with its neighbors. Vanuatu in 2010 was a small nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. It was made up of a chain of 83 islands with a total population of around 230,000 people, most of whom were Melanesian. The official language was English and Bislama, but the majority of the population spoke various local languages. The economy of Vanuatu in 2010 was largely agricultural-based and centered around subsistence farming and fishing.
