Since then, Ukraine has experienced periods of political instability while also facing numerous challenges such as corruption and economic hardship. Despite these difficulties however, Ukraine remains an important regional power with strong ties to both Europe and Asia. It is also a member of numerous international organizations such as United Nations and World Health Organization. Ukraine is a large country located in Eastern Europe, bordered by Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Romania and Hungary. It has a population of over 46 million people and the official language is Ukrainian. The government had also implemented various reforms such as introducing flat taxes on income and profits which helped attract greater levels of foreign investment. Education was another priority for the government with initiatives such as free primary school tuition introduced in order to improve literacy rates amongst citizens. The tourism industry was also beginning to take off with many visitors attracted by Ukraine’s diverse range of cultural attractions including ancient castles and churches found in cities such as Lviv and Kyiv (Kiev). Other popular tourist destinations included the Carpathian Mountains which offer some of the best skiing in Europe as well as beautiful beaches along the Black Sea coast.
