The islands have been inhabited for thousands of years by Polynesian settlers, who are thought to have first arrived in the region around 3,000 BC. The first Europeans to visit the islands were Spanish explorers in 1568, followed by British and American whalers in the 19th century. In 1892, Tuvalu became a British protectorate and was incorporated into the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony in 1916. After World War II, it became part of the British Crown Colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands until 1975 when it gained independence as Tuvalu. Since then, Tuvalu has experienced periods of economic growth and political stability while also facing numerous challenges such as climate change and over-fishing. Despite these difficulties, however, Tuvalu remains an important regional power with strong ties to both Europe and Asia. It is also a member of numerous international organizations such as the United Nations and World Health Organization. Tuvalu is an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is composed of nine small islands and atolls, spread over 1,000 miles of ocean and has a population of 11,000 people. Funafuti is the capital city. The main language spoken in Tuvalu is Tuvaluan although English and Samoan are also widely used. The currency in use is the Australian dollar. In 2010, Tuvalu’s economy was largely reliant on foreign aid from countries such as Australia and New Zealand as well as money generated from fishing licenses and stamps issued by the government to collectors around the world. Agriculture was also important with crops such as coconuts and taro being grown in some parts of the country. The government also invested heavily into infrastructure projects such as roads, ports and telecommunications which helped to improve connectivity within the country as well as attract more foreign investment. In addition, there were numerous technological advancements such as internet access that were being implemented in some parts of the country in order to make it more competitive globally. Furthermore, education was a major focus for the government with initiatives such as free primary school tuition introduced in order to improve literacy rates amongst citizens.
