According to localcollegeexplorer, Togo is a small nation located in West Africa, sandwiched between the larger states of Ghana and Benin. It has a population of approximately 8 million people and covers an area of just over 56,000 km2. Despite its small size, Togo has a long and complex history that dates back to the 15th century. The earliest inhabitants of Togo were the Ewe people who migrated from Nigeria in the 15th century. These people established a number of small kingdoms which existed until the 18th century when they were conquered by the powerful kingdom of Dahomey (now Benin). The Dahomey kingdom ruled over Togo for almost two centuries before it was annexed by Germany in 1884 as part of German West Africa. Germany’s rule was marked by exploitation and oppression which led to several uprisings such as the 1918 rebellion led by German-educated lawyer Victor Hodoul. This uprising failed due to lack of support from other African countries and Germany maintained control until World War I when it was forced to surrender its colonies to France and Britain under the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. France then assumed control over Togo and divided it into two separate territories: French Togoland (now part of Ghana) and British Togoland (now part of Benin). In 1954 French Togoland voted for independence from France while British Togoland also gained autonomy after negotiations with Britain during 1956-57 period. The two territories were then unified in April 1960 to form modern day Republic Of Togo with Sylvanus Olympio as its first president. However this period was marked by political instability due to military coups, ethnic tensions between different tribes etc.. This led to Olympio’s assassination in 1963 followed by another coup which installed Gnassingbé Eyadéma as head of state who then ruled until his death in 2005 when his son Faure Gnassingbé took power. Since then there have been several elections held most recently in 2020 where Faure won with 72% vote share marking his fourth consecutive term as president since 2005. Togo, officially the Togolese Republic, is a country located in West Africa and has a population of around 7 million people. It is bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. The capital city of Lome was home to around 800 thousand people and was known for its vibrant culture and lively markets. The official language of Togo is French with many other local languages also being spoken. The currency used in Togo is the West African Franc (XOF). The economy of Togo in 2010 mainly relied on exports, tourism as well as agriculture and foreign aid. Exports accounted for around 60% of GDP with key exports being cocoa beans, phosphates, cement and coffee. Tourism also provided an important source of revenue for the country with many tourists visiting to experience its stunning landscapes such as Mt. Agou or Kpalime Waterfalls. Agriculture accounted for nearly 28% of GDP with key crops being cassava, yams, corn, millet and sorghum. Foreign aid also provided an important source of revenue to help improve infrastructure in the country such as roads and bridges. The government also invested heavily into infrastructure projects such as highways, telecommunications networks and ports which helped to improve connectivity within the country as well as attract more tourists from abroad. In addition, there were numerous technological advancements such as mobile phones that were being implemented in some parts of the country in order to make it more competitive globally.
