According to localcollegeexplorer, Tanzania is a country located in East Africa, bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. It is home to the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the world-famous Serengeti National Park. Tanzania has a rich history stretching back to the 8th century when it was part of the powerful African trading network known as “Swahili Coast”. During this time it was heavily influenced by Arab and Persian traders who brought with them Islam and other cultural elements that remain today. The 16th century saw Tanzania become part of the powerful East African coastal city-states such as Kilwa Kisiwani and Mombasa. This period also saw increased European exploration of the region with Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama visiting Mombasa in 1498. Later on in 1885 European colonization began when Germany claimed control over Tanganyika (modern day Tanzania) as part of its German East Africa colony. This period saw an influx of German immigrants which led to some conflict between them and local tribes who were already living there. In 1916 British forces invaded German East Africa during World War I and took control over Tanganyika until after the war when they returned it to Germany under a League of Nations mandate before finally giving it independence in 1961 as Tanganyika. In 1964 Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar to form modern day Tanzania following a revolution that overthrew Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah from power on Zanzibar island in 1963. Since then Tanzania has seen steady economic growth despite some internal political unrest throughout its history. Today Tanzania is a constitutional republic led by President John Magufuli since 2015 who has been praised for his anti-corruption efforts but criticized for his authoritarian rule style which has seen restrictions on freedom of speech, press freedom and civil society organizations being curtailed or shut down altogether. Despite these issues Tanzania remains an important regional player with strong ties to both Western countries and China while also playing an important role in regional peacekeeping operations such as those conducted by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a country located in East Africa and has a population of around 50 million people. It is bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Malawi. The capital city of Dodoma was home to around 500 thousand people and was known for its vibrant culture and lively markets. The official language of Tanzania was Swahili with English also being widely spoken. The currency used in Tanzania was the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). The economy of Tanzania in 2010 mainly relied on mining and tourism as well as agriculture and foreign aid. Mining accounted for around 8% of the GDP with gold being the main mineral extracted from the country’s mines. Tourism also provided an important source of revenue for the country with many tourists visiting to experience its breathtaking landscapes such as Mount Kilimanjaro, Serengeti National Park and Zanzibar Island. Agriculture accounted for nearly 30% of GDP with key crops being rice, maize, wheat, coffee and tea. Foreign aid also provided an important source of revenue to help improve infrastructure in the country such as roads and bridges. The government also invested heavily into infrastructure projects such as roads, railways and ports which helped to improve connectivity within the country as well as attract more tourists from abroad. In addition, there were numerous technological advancements such as mobile phones that were being implemented in some parts of the country in order to make it more competitive globally.
