His son Bashar al-Assad has been president since then and continues to rule with an iron fist as of 2021. Despite numerous uprisings against his rule, Assad’s government remains in power today despite international sanctions placed on it for its human rights abuses and involvement in regional conflicts such as the war in neighboring Iraq and civil war in Yemen. In 2010, Syria was a country located in the Middle East. It had a population of about 22 million people and was bordered by Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel. The capital city of Damascus was home to around 1.7 million people and was known for its ancient architecture and culture. The official language of Syria was Arabic and the currency used was the Syrian pound. The economy of Syria in 2010 mainly relied on agriculture, industry, oil exports and tourism. Agriculture accounted for about 25% of the GDP with major crops being wheat, barley, cotton and fruit. Industry also played an important role in the economy with manufacturing contributing 14% to the GDP. Oil exports provided an important source of revenue for the country as well as employment opportunities for its citizens. Tourism also provided an important source of revenue with tourists visiting Syria to experience its cultural heritage sites such as Palmyra or Aleppo. The government also invested heavily into infrastructure projects such as roads, railways and airports which helped to improve connectivity within the country and attract more tourists from abroad.
