According to localcollegeexplorer, South Sudan is a landlocked country located in East-Central Africa. It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, Democratic Republic of Congo to the southwest and Central African Republic to the west. The country gained its independence from Sudan in 2011 after a long and bitter civil war that lasted more than two decades. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to colonial rule in the 19th century when Britain and Egypt divided what was then known as Anglo-Egyptian Sudan into two separate regions – Northern and Southern Sudan. This division created an underlying tension between the two regions which escalated into a full-blown civil war in 1983 when Southern rebels formed an alliance known as Anya Nya II and began fighting against North Sudanese forces. The civil war continued until 2005 when a Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed between both sides which included provisions for a referendum on independence for South Sudan. The referendum was held on January 9th 2011 with over 98% of voters opting for secession from North Sudan leading to South Sudan’s formal declaration of independence on July 9th 2011. Since then, South Sudan has been struggling with internal conflict as various ethnic groups have clashed over resources, power and territorial control leading to widespread violence across much of the country. In 2013, a peace agreement was reached between some of these factions but fighting has continued in several areas leading to mass displacement of people and humanitarian crises such as famine due to lack of food security. In August 2015, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir signed a new peace deal with rebel leader Riek Machar which included provisions for power sharing between both sides however this agreement has not yet been implemented due to ongoing clashes between government forces and rebel groups throughout 2016-2017. Despite these challenges, South Sudan remains committed towards achieving peace through dialogue while also striving towards economic development by investing in infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and other public works initiatives. In 2010, South Sudan was an impoverished nation in the midst of a civil war. After decades of conflict between the North and South, the region declared its independence in 2011. In 2010, however, the country was still struggling to provide basic services to its citizens. The economy was weak and heavily reliant on foreign aid. With only a rudimentary healthcare system, access to medical care was limited for most citizens. Education levels were also low with only about 30% of primary school-age children attending classes. Despite these challenges, South Sudan had abundant natural resources including oil and minerals which provided some economic opportunities for its people. But due to ongoing conflict and instability these resources were not being fully utilized. Additionally, corruption and mismanagement of funds further hindered economic development in the country. As a result, poverty levels were high with many living without adequate food or shelter. Furthermore, lack of infrastructure meant that access to basic services such as clean water and sanitation were limited for many South Sudanese people. In short, despite its potential for growth, in 2010 South Sudan remained a desperately poor nation with little hope for improvement in the near future.
