According to localcollegeexplorer, the history of the Seychelles is one of a long and varied journey. Located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa, Seychelles is an archipelagic nation made up of 115 islands. The islands were first discovered by Europeans in 1502 when Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed on Mahé, the largest island in the archipelago. Da Gama named the islands after Jean Moreau de Séchelles, a finance minister in France at the time. From 1517 to 1756, Seychelles was under Portuguese control and was used as a transit point for ships sailing between Europe and Asia. During this period, several French settlers arrived on the islands and established plantations and trading posts. In 1756, Seychelles was taken over by Britain during the Seven Years’ War and became part of its colony known as British East Africa. During this time, slavery was abolished but indentured labour from India was introduced to work on plantations producing cinnamon, coconuts, tea and coffee. The economy flourished under British rule until 1814 when it was returned to France as part of a treaty ending hostilities between Britain and France during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1903, Seychelles became a crown colony of Britain once again until 1976 when it gained independence as an independent republic within the Commonwealth with James Mancham as its first president. Mancham served until 1977 when he was overthrown in a coup led by France Albert René who then ruled until 2004 when he stepped down from office after 27 years in power due to ill health. Since 2004, Seychelles has been ruled by democratically elected governments with James Michel serving as president from 2004–2016 followed by Danny Faure who remains president today (2020). The economy has grown significantly since independence with tourism being one of its major sources of income along with fishing and agriculture particularly vanilla production which is now one of its main exports. Today (2020), Seychelles is considered one of Africa’s most prosperous countries with high levels of human development including strong healthcare systems free education for all children up to secondary level along with good infrastructure such as roads airports etc.. In addition to this there are numerous conservation projects designed to protect its unique biodiversity which makes it one of Africa’s most popular destinations for eco-tourism today (2020). In 2010, Seychelles was a democratic republic located in the Indian Ocean. This small nation had an area of 455 square kilometers and a population of around 90,000 people. The capital and largest city was Victoria while other major cities included Praslin and La Digue. English and French were the official languages of the country. The economy of Seychelles in 2010 relied heavily on tourism, fishing and agriculture. Tourism accounted for around 25% of GDP with many visitors attracted to its stunning beaches and vibrant culture. Fishing was also an important source of income for many people while agriculture included small-scale production of coconuts, cinnamon, vanilla, bananas and papayas for export markets. In terms of infrastructure, Seychelles had a modern port at Victoria which enabled easy access to international trade partners. A well-developed road system connected all parts of the country while public transportation options included buses and boats for tourists to explore its tropical beauty.
