According to localcollegeexplorer, Mexico is a country located in North America, bordered by the United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the south. It has a population of around 130 million people and covers an area of 1.9 million km2, making it one of the largest countries in the world. The country has a rich history stretching back thousands of years and has been home to many different cultures and empires throughout its long existence. The earliest inhabitants of what is now Mexico were hunter-gatherers who lived in small tribes along the coastlines and inland areas. This changed around 1500 BC when the Olmecs – one of Mesoamerica’s earliest civilizations – settled in what is now Veracruz state, establishing cities such as San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan. This was followed by other civilizations such as the Zapotecs, Mayans and Aztecs who all left their mark on Mexican culture with their art, architecture, religion and language still being prominent today. In 1519 Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes arrived in Mexico leading to almost three centuries of Spanish rule. During this time Catholicism was introduced as well as new technologies which helped to transform Mexico from a largely agrarian society into an industrial one. In 1810 Mexico declared its independence from Spain but it wasn’t until 1821 that it finally became an independent nation following a long struggle between Spanish forces and Mexican rebels led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Since independence Mexico has gone through various periods of political instability but today it is considered one of Latin America’s most stable democracies with a vibrant economy based on industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and oil production among others. Its culture is also incredibly diverse with influences from Europe, Africa and indigenous peoples all playing their part in creating a truly unique identity that makes Mexico so special. Mexico in 2010 was a vibrant and diverse country with a population of around 112 million people. It was the 11th most populated country in the world, and the most populous Spanish-speaking country. Mexico had an area of 1,964,375 square kilometers, making it the 14th largest country by landmass. The capital city was Mexico City, which had a population of 8.8 million people and was the largest city in Latin America. The official language of Mexico in 2010 was Spanish and there were several other indigenous languages spoken throughout the country such as Nahuatl and Maya. In terms of religion, Christianity was the predominant faith with Roman Catholicism being practiced by around 82% of Mexicans. Mexico had a market economy which relied heavily on international trade with countries like the United States and Canada for exports such as oil, coffee, fruits and vegetables as well as imports such as machinery and electronics. Tourism also played an important role in its economy with destinations such as Cancun being very popular among travelers from around the world due to its beautiful beaches and cultural attractions. In terms of healthcare, Mexico had a public health system that provided basic medical care for citizens free or at a low cost through government subsidies or private insurance plans if they chose to do so. However there were still some areas where access to healthcare remained limited due to poverty or lack of infrastructure which meant that many Mexicans still lacked access to medical care even though it was available elsewhere in the country. Education was also widely available with an overall literacy rate among adults aged 15 years old or older at 93%. This high rate can be attributed to government investments into education over time which allowed access to quality primary schools across Mexico regardless of social class or location due to tuition fee subsidies if needed as well as generous scholarship programs for university students wishing to pursue higher education abroad if they so desired. Overall, life expectancy stood at 75 years old while infant mortality rate stood at 18 per 1000 live births indicating good healthcare standards overall across the nation despite some areas where access remained limited due to poverty or lack of infrastructure. Despite these impressive figures, poverty still remained an issue with many living on less than $2 USD per day due to lack of employment opportunities or other social factors such as discrimination based on religion or gender even though it was illegal under law at that time.
