According to localcollegeexplorer, Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa. It is a former British colony and gained independence in 1968. The country has a population of around 1.2 million people and covers an area of just over 2,000 km2. Mauritius has a rich and varied history that dates back thousands of years. The earliest inhabitants were the Dutch who arrived in 1598 and named the island after Prince Maurice Van Nassau, however they left shortly afterwards due to the hostile environment. The British then took control of Mauritius in 1810 as part of their colonial expansion and it remained a British colony until 1968 when it declared its independence as the Republic of Mauritius. During its colonial period, Mauritius was heavily influenced by both African and European cultures which can still be seen today in its cuisine, music, dance and architecture. Its economy was also heavily reliant on sugar production which made up more than 90% of its exports during this time. However, since independence Mauritius has diversified its economy to include tourism, textiles, offshore banking and other industries such as IT services which have helped to drive economic growth over recent decades making it one of Africa’s most prosperous nations today. Today Mauritius is known for its stunning beaches, spectacular coral reefs and vibrant marine life making it a popular tourist destination for those looking for some sun-drenched paradise in a remote corner of the world. The country also prides itself on being politically stable with an open market economy that ranks among the freest in Africa according to World Bank reports. Mauritius in 2010 was a small island nation situated off the coast of East Africa in the Indian Ocean. At this time, it had a population of 1.3 million people with an area of 1,865 square kilometers. The country was composed of several islands including Mauritius itself, Rodrigues, Agalega and St Brandon. The capital and largest city was Port Louis which is situated on the main island. The official language in Mauritius in 2010 was English while other languages such as French and Creole were also widely spoken by locals. The majority of citizens were Hindu with a minority of Muslim and other religious beliefs also present. In terms of economy, Mauritius had a strong tourism industry with visitors flocking to enjoy its stunning beaches and unique culture. In addition to this fishing and trading provided some income as there were many species of fish that could be caught from the surrounding waters while goods were traded between neighbouring countries such as India or Madagascar for additional income sources. The healthcare system in Mauritius was relatively advanced with several hospitals located throughout major cities such as Port Louis providing basic medical care for citizens free or at a low cost through government subsidies or private insurance plans if they chose to do so. Education was also widely available with an overall literacy rate among adults aged 15 years old or older at 84%. This high rate can be attributed to the availability of quality schools throughout the country that provided access to education regardless of social class or location due to government subsidies for tuition fees if needed as well as generous scholarship programs for university students wishing to pursue higher education abroad if they so desired. Overall, life expectancy stood at 72 years old while infant mortality rate stood at 12 per 1000 live births making it one of the highest rates in Africa at that time indicating good healthcare standards overall across the nation. Despite these impressive figures, poverty still remained an issue with many living on less than $2 USD per day due to lack of employment opportunities or other social factors such as discrimination based on religion or gender even though it was illegal under law at that time.
