According to localcollegeexplorer, the Marshall Islands is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and Australia. It consists of two archipelagos, the Ratak and Ralik chains, and is made up of 29 coral atolls and five isolated islands. The Marshall Islands were first inhabited by Micronesian people around 2,000 years ago. It was then colonized by Spain in 1529, followed by Germany in 1885. In 1914, Japan took control of the islands during World War I and held them until 1945 when U.S forces captured them during World War II. From 1946 to 1958, the Marshall Islands were part of the United Nations’ Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands which was administered by the United States as part of its strategic interests in the region. During this period a number of military installations were built on various islands including Kwajalein Atoll which became a major U.S missile testing site during the Cold War era. In 1979, a nuclear test conducted on Runit Island led to widespread radioactive contamination throughout the region. In 1986, after years of negotiations with Washington D.C., a Compact of Free Association was signed granting full independence to the Marshall Islands as well as financial assistance from America for its development projects and military defence obligations in return for continued access to strategic sites within its territory such as Kwajalein Atoll and Wake Island. Today Marshall Islanders are proud citizens with their own unique culture, language (Ebon), art forms (stick charts)and traditional sports (stick fighting). The country has also become a popular tourist destination due to its pristine beaches, spectacular dive sites and vibrant marine life making it an ideal holiday destination for those looking for some sun-drenched paradise in a remote corner of the world. The Marshall Islands is a small island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Hawaii and Australia. In 2010, it had a population of just over 68,000 people spread out over 24 coral atolls and 1,152 islands. The country is divided into two distinct groups: the Ratak Chain of Islands in the east, and the Ralik Chain of Islands in the west. The capital city is Majuro, located on the atoll of Majuro. In 2010, Marshall Islanders spoke English as their official language and Marshallese as their native language. The majority of citizens were Christian with a minority of Buddhist and other religious beliefs also present. In terms of economy, Marshall Islands relied heavily on fishing and tourism for income in 2010. Fishing was particularly important to local economies due to its abundance in tuna which provided employment opportunities to many islanders. In addition to this tourism also provided some income as tourists flocked to enjoy its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. The healthcare system in the Marshall Islands was limited due to lack of resources but there were several hospitals located on major islands such as Majuro and Kwajalein that provided basic medical care for citizens free of charge or at a low cost through government subsidies or private insurance plans if they chose to do so. Education was also limited with only 57% of school-aged children attending primary school in 2010 due to lack of resources as well as high dropout rates caused by poverty or other social factors such as early marriage among young girls. Despite these limitations, the people of Marshall Islands remained resilient with many islanders continuing to practice traditional customs such as fishing, farming and weaving baskets from pandanus leaves which were sold for extra income or traded for goods from neighbouring islands. Overall, life expectancy stood at 72 years old while infant mortality rate stood at 16 per 1000 live births making it one of the lowest rates in Oceania at that time.
