According to localcollegeexplorer, Liberia is a West African nation located on the Atlantic Coast. It was the first independent republic in Africa, founded by freed American and Caribbean slaves in 1847. Liberia declared its independence from the American Colonization Society, a private organization that had been sending free African-Americans to Africa since 1820. The country was formed with the intention of creating an African-American homeland and providing a place for freed slaves to return to their ancestral homeland. The early years of Liberia’s independence were tumultuous due to internal strife and foreign interference from France, Britain, and the United States. In the late 19th century, Liberia became increasingly subservient to US economic interests in exchange for protection from European colonial powers. During this period, Liberia experienced rapid economic growth as it became a major exporter of rubber, coffee, and palm oil. In 1944, Liberia held its first democratic elections which saw William Tubman elected president. Tubman’s presidency saw continued economic growth as well as improved education and healthcare services for Liberians. After Tubman’s death in 1971 his successor William Tolbert continued his legacy of modernization until 1980 when Samuel Doe seized power in a military coup which ushered in an era of political instability and civil war that lasted until 2003 when President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected in the first post-war democratic elections. Since then Liberia has seen sustained economic growth under successive governments led by President Sirleaf (2006-2018) and current President George Weah (2018-Present). In 2010, Liberia was a small West African nation located on the Atlantic coast and bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Cote d’Ivoire. The population of the country was estimated to be around 3.5 million people with 16 ethnic groups and many languages spoken among them. The official language was English while the most widely spoken language among locals was Liberian English which is a mix of English and African languages. Politically, Liberia was a presidential representative democratic republic with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf serving as head of state from 2006-2018. This period marked an important transition for the country as it emerged from two civil wars that had taken place in 1989-1996 and 1999-2003 respectively. During this time period, Liberia also established its first independent judiciary since its independence from Britain in 1847. In terms of economy, Liberia’s main industries included rubber production, timber exports, iron ore mining and diamond mining with services such as banking also playing an important role in economic growth. Agriculture made up around 25% of GDP but employed more than 75% of the population due to its focus on subsistence farming practices. In terms of education, primary school enrollment rates were high by 2010 but secondary school enrollment rates were much lower due to financial constraints that prevented many adolescents from continuing their studies beyond primary school level. Additionally, only 8% students went on to pursue tertiary level education due to limited resources available for higher education institutions at this time period. Overall, Liberia in 2010 had made some progress since the end of its civil wars but faced many challenges such as high levels of poverty and unemployment especially among rural populations that were not able to benefit from urban economic growth opportunities or access quality education resources due to limited financial resources available at this time period. Additionally, political instability caused by tensions between different ethnic groups caused further instability that hindered economic development and overall progress within the country during this time period.
