According to localcollegeexplorer, the history of Israel dates back to ancient times when the land was inhabited by a number of Semitic peoples. The Hebrews, who were descendants of Abraham, eventually settled in the region around 1200 BC and established the Kingdom of Israel. This kingdom flourished until 722 BC when it was conquered by the Assyrians. The Babylonians then took control of the region in 586 BC, followed by the Persians in 539 BC. In 332 BC Alexander the Great conquered much of the area, which eventually came under Roman rule in 63 BC. During this period, Jesus Christ lived and preached in Galilee and Judea before his crucifixion in 30 AD. After several centuries of Roman rule, the region was conquered by Muslim Arabs in 637 AD who controlled it until 1099 when it was captured by Christian Crusaders from Europe. In 1517, Ottoman Turks captured most of present-day Israel and Palestine from the Crusaders and ruled over them for 400 years until 1917 when British forces defeated them during World War I. Following World War II, Britain withdrew its forces from Palestine and Jewish people began migrating there en masse to establish their homeland. After a series of wars with neighboring Arab countries during 1948-1967, Israel gained control over much of Palestine which it still holds today as an independent nation-state. Despite ongoing conflicts with its neighbors, Israel has become one of the most prosperous countries in the Middle East due to its strong economy and vibrant democracy. In 2010, Israel was a sovereign country located in the Middle East with a population of just over 7.5 million people. It is the world’s 97th most populous country and has 6 administrative districts and 1 capital city (Jerusalem). The official language is Hebrew and the currency is the Shekel (ILS). Israel has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and cool winters. In 2010, Israel had an economy heavily reliant on foreign direct investment from multinational companies such as Intel, Microsoft, Google and Apple. The service sector accounted for around 60% of GDP while agriculture contributed around 10%. Major industries included technology, engineering, pharmaceuticals and tourism. Exports of these goods as well as services such as tourism helped boost economic growth during this period of time. The government of Israel in 2010 was led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who served from 2009-present day. During this period of time there were several economic reforms implemented to improve the country’s financial situation including increasing foreign investment into key industries such as technology, engineering, pharmaceuticals and tourism. Additionally, the government implemented policies to reduce poverty levels across Israel which helped boost living standards for many people during this period of time. In addition to these economic reforms, there were also efforts to improve security throughout the region which had been an issue in previous years due to increased tensions between Israel and its neighbors in the Middle East.
