According to localcollegeexplorer, the history of Ireland dates back to pre-historic times when the first settlers arrived on the island around 8000 BC. These settlers were known as the Celts and they brought with them their own culture and language, which is known today as Gaelic. During this period, a number of kingdoms were established in various parts of the country, such as Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht. By around 400 AD, Christianity had spread throughout Ireland and by 600 AD it was a major part of Irish culture. Around this time, the High Kings of Tara began to emerge as a powerful political force in Ireland. The Viking invasions began in 795 AD and eventually resulted in the establishment of Dublin as an important trading post for them. Over the following centuries, many wars were fought between various Irish clans and foreign powers such as England and Scotland. Eventually, in 1603 England gained control over Ireland through a series of military campaigns known as The Nine Years War (1594-1603). This led to centuries of English rule over Ireland until 1922 when most of the island became an independent republic. Despite its turbulent past, modern-day Ireland is now one of Europe’s most prosperous countries with a vibrant economy and strong democratic system. In 2010, Ireland was a sovereign country located in the North Atlantic with a population of just over 4.5 million people. It is the world’s 123rd most populous country and has 32 counties and 1 capital city (Dublin). The official language is English and the currency is the Euro (EUR). Ireland has a temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers. In 2010, Ireland had an economy heavily reliant on foreign direct investment from multinational companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple and Facebook. The service sector accounted for around 70% of GDP while agriculture contributed around 10%. Major industries included technology, engineering, pharmaceuticals and tourism. Exports of these goods as well as services such as tourism helped boost economic growth during this period of time. The government of Ireland in 2010 was led by Prime Minister Brian Cowen who served from 2008-2011. During this period of time there were several economic reforms implemented to improve the country’s financial situation including increasing foreign investment into key industries such as technology, engineering, pharmaceuticals and tourism. Additionally, the government implemented policies to reduce poverty levels across Ireland which helped boost living standards for many people during this period of time.
