According to localcollegeexplorer, Iraq is an ancient land located in the Middle East and has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Its earliest known civilization was the Sumerian Empire which existed from 3000 to 2000 BCE. During this time, Iraq saw a great deal of cultural and scientific advancement including the invention of writing. From 2000 to 539 BCE, Iraq was part of the Babylonian Empire before it was conquered by Cyrus the Great in 539 BCE. Following Cyrus’s death, Iraq fell under successive empires such as the Achaemenid, Seleucid, Parthian and Sassanid Empires until 636 CE when it was conquered by Muslim Arabs. Since then, Iraq has been under various Islamic dynasties such as the Umayyad, Abbasid and Ottoman Empires which all contributed to its culture and architecture. In 1920, Iraq became a British protectorate until 1932 when it declared its independence. Since then, Iraq has experienced a series of wars including the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) as well as two Gulf Wars (1991 & 2003). In 2003, Saddam Hussein’s regime was overthrown by US forces leading to political instability in the country which lasted until 2005 when a new government was established. Today, Iraq is an important regional player in both Asia and the Middle East and is a member of both OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) and Arab League (League of Arab States). The country has seen steady economic growth due to its large oil reserves as well as its increasing number of foreign investments from other countries such as China and India. Despite this growth however, much of Iraq remains unstable due to sectarian divisions between Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims which have caused tension throughout the region for many years now. In 2010, Iraq was a sovereign country located in the Middle East with a population of over 31 million people. It is the world’s 15th most populous country and has 18 provinces and 1 capital district (Baghdad). The official language is Arabic and the currency is the Iraqi Dinar (IQD). Iraq has a predominantly arid climate with hot summers and mild winters. In 2010, Iraq had an economy heavily reliant on oil exports as well as other natural resources such as natural gas. The service sector accounted for around 60% of GDP while agriculture contributed around 20%. Major industries included textiles, construction, food processing, electronics manufacturing and tourism. Despite the difficulties faced by Iraq during this period of time due to ongoing conflicts, exports of these goods as well as services such as tourism helped boost economic growth during this period of time. The government of Iraq in 2010 was led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki who served from 2006-2014. During this period of time there were several economic reforms implemented to improve the country’s financial situation including increasing foreign investment into key industries such as oil & gas production, nuclear energy production and infrastructure development. Additionally, the government implemented policies to reduce poverty levels across Iraq which helped boost living standards for many people during this period of time.
