According to localcollegeexplorer, Iran is a country located in the Middle East and has been inhabited since ancient times. Its earliest known civilization was the Elamite Empire which existed from 3000 to 539 BCE. During this time, Iran saw a great deal of cultural and scientific advancement including the invention of the first ever alphabet. From 539 to 331 BCE, Iran was part of the Achaemenid Empire before it was conquered by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE. Following Alexander’s death, Iran fell under the rule of various empires including the Seleucid and Parthian Empires until 224 CE when it became independent under the Sassanid Dynasty which lasted until 651 CE when it was conquered by Muslim Arabs. Since then, Iran has been under various Islamic dynasties such as the Safavids, Afsharids and Qajars which all contributed to its culture and architecture. In 1979, Iran experienced a revolution that overthrew its monarchy and established an Islamic Republic led by Ayatollah Khomeini. Since then, Iran has seen some economic growth due to its large oil reserves as well as its increasing number of foreign investments from other countries such as China and India. Today, Iran is an important regional player in both Asia and the Middle East and is a member of both OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) and ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization). The country has seen steady economic growth due to its strong agricultural sector as well as its manufacturing base which has helped to bolster its economy over the years. In 2010, Iran was a sovereign country located in the Middle East with a population of over 74 million people. It is the world’s 18th most populous country and has 31 provinces and 1 capital district (Tehran). The official language is Persian and the currency is the Iranian Rial (IRR). Iran has a diverse climate ranging from arid and semi-arid regions to subtropical along its Caspian coastline. In 2010, Iran had an economy heavily reliant on oil exports as well as other natural resources such as natural gas. The service sector accounted for around 60% of GDP while agriculture contributed around 20%. Major industries included textiles, construction, food processing, electronics manufacturing and tourism. Despite international sanctions imposed on Iran during this period of time, exports of these goods as well as services such as tourism helped boost economic growth during this period of time. The government of Iran in 2010 was led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who served from 2005-2013. During this period of time there were several economic reforms implemented to improve the country’s financial situation including increasing foreign investment into key industries such as oil & gas production, nuclear energy production and infrastructure development. Additionally, the government implemented policies to reduce poverty levels across Iran which helped boost living standards for many people during this period of time.
