According to localcollegeexplorer, Hungary is a landlocked nation located in Central Europe. The earliest known inhabitants of the region were the Celts, who arrived around the 5th century BCE. In the 9th century CE, the Magyar tribes migrated to the region and established what is now Hungary. In 1000 CE, Stephen I was crowned as Hungary’s first king and converted to Christianity, unifying the country under a single faith. During this time Hungary flourished as an agricultural and commercial power, trading with its neighbors. In 1526, Hungary was defeated in a war with the Ottoman Empire and came under Ottoman rule until 1699 when it regained its independence. However, this period of autonomy was short-lived as Austria annexed Hungary in 1867. For over four decades Austria-Hungary ruled over both countries until World War I when they declared independence from their former rulers. After a brief period of democracy in 1918-1919, Hungary was taken over by communist forces who were allied with Nazi Germany during World War II. After 1945, Soviet forces occupied Hungary until 1989 when free elections were held for the first time since 1945 which ushered in a period of democratic rule that has lasted until today. Since then, Hungary has seen steady economic growth due to its strong agricultural sector and manufacturing base as well as its increasing number of foreign investments from other European countries such as Germany and France. Today, Hungary is a member of both NATO and EU (European Union) and is an important regional player in Europe. In 2010, Hungary was a small Central European country with a population of around 10 million people. It borders seven other countries, including Austria and Slovakia. Budapest is the capital and largest city in Hungary. The official language is Hungarian and the currency is the Forint. The country has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons and experiences both hot summers and cold winters. In 2010, Hungary had a market economy with an emphasis on exports, mainly agricultural products such as wheat, corn, potatoes, sunflowers, fruits, vegetables and livestock. The automotive industry was also significant for the country’s economy; it was the largest employer in 2010. Hungary had established itself as one of Europe’s leading industrial countries by this time as well. Tourism was also an important sector for the Hungarian economy in 2010; Budapest was one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe due to its rich cultural heritage and beautiful architecture. Additionally, many people visited Hungary to experience its thermal baths which are renowned for their healing properties. The government of Hungary in 2010 was a parliamentary republic led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán who served from 1998-2002 and again from 2010-present day. During this period of time there were several economic reforms implemented to improve the country’s financial situation including reducing public debt and encouraging foreign investment into key industries such as IT, renewable energy sources and biotechnology research & development. Despite these efforts however, economic growth remained slow due to global economic downturns during this period of time which made it difficult for Hungary to make significant progress towards achieving its economic goals.
