According to localcollegeexplorer, Honduras is a small Central American nation located between Nicaragua and Guatemala. The earliest known inhabitants were the Maya peoples, who arrived in the region around 1000 BCE. In 1502, Christopher Columbus arrived in Honduras and claimed it for Spain. Over the next two centuries, Spanish colonists established settlements throughout the region and built an extensive network of roads and fortifications. In 1821, Honduras declared independence from Spain as part of the United Provinces of Central America. However, this union was short-lived as political instability led to its dissolution in 1838. Since then, Honduras has experienced periods of both political stability and turmoil as various factions fought for control over the government. In 1982, free and fair elections were held for the first time in decades which ushered in a period of democratic rule that has lasted until today. Since then, Honduras has seen steady economic growth due to its natural resources such as gold and copper as well as its agricultural exports which include coffee and bananas. Today, Honduras is a member of both CARICOM (Caribbean Community) and SICA (Central American Integration System) and is an important regional player in Central America. In 2010, Honduras was a developing nation with a struggling economy. Its people enjoyed a life expectancy of 72 years, which was slightly above the average for Central America. Honduras had an education system that was beginning to improve, and access to skilled labor was increasing, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment. The country also had a rich cultural heritage, with many museums and galleries showcasing its history and traditions. Additionally, Honduras had some of the most beautiful landscapes in Central America, from lush rainforests to stunning beaches along its borders. It also had strong connections to other countries around the world through its membership in both the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) and Organization of American States (OAS). All these factors combined to make Honduras an interesting destination for tourists from around the globe. Check ethnicityology for Honduras in 2018.
