According to localcollegeexplorer, Grenada’s history dates back to the early 1600s when the country was colonized by France. The French named the island “Grenada” after the Spanish word for pomegranate, which became abundant on the island. In 1650, Grenada was taken over by Great Britain and it remained under British rule until 1974 when it achieved independence. During this period, Grenada experienced a period of rapid economic growth due to its agricultural exports, specifically nutmeg and cocoa. This growth allowed for a diverse population with many different cultural influences. In 1979, a Marxist-Leninist government overthrew the democratically elected government of Maurice Bishop and implemented a socialist style of governance. This government was opposed by many in Grenada and eventually overthrown in 1983 by an American-led invasion led by President Ronald Reagan. After the invasion, Grenada returned to democratic rule and has been stable ever since. Today, Grenada is a member of both CARICOM and the Commonwealth of Nations and has seen steady economic growth over recent decades due to its tourism sector as well as its agricultural exports. In 2010, Grenada was a prosperous and modern nation. Its economy was strong and the standard of living was high. Its people enjoyed a life expectancy of 71 years, which was above the average for the Caribbean region. Grenada had an advanced education system and highly skilled workforce, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment. The country also boasted a rich cultural heritage, with many museums, galleries and festivals celebrating its history and traditions. Additionally, Grenada had some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Caribbean, from lush rainforests to beautiful beaches along its borders. It also had strong connections to other countries around the world through its membership in both the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and Commonwealth of Nations.
