According to localcollegeexplorer, Gabon is a small country located in Central Africa, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and sharing borders with Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and the Republic of Congo. The country has an estimated population of 2 million people and covers a land area of 267,667 square kilometers. Gabon was first inhabited by hunter-gatherers more than 10,000 years ago. It was later colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century and then by the French in 1839 who established it as a colony. In 1910 Gabon became part of French Equatorial Africa (AEF) which included present-day Chad, Central African Republic, Congo Brazzaville, and Gabon. During this period France developed Gabon’s infrastructure while exploiting its natural resources such as timber and minerals like manganese and uranium. In 1946 it became an overseas territory of France with limited autonomy but full voting rights within the French Union. In 1958 it became an autonomous republic within the French Community before gaining full independence on August 17th 1960 under President Léon M’ba. The first decade after independence saw rapid economic growth due to increased oil production which led to improved infrastructure development such as roads, schools, hospitals etc. Unfortunately this growth was not accompanied by political stability and several coups were attempted throughout this period culminating in Omar Bongo taking power in 1967 and ruling until his death in 2009 when his son Ali Bongo took over as president following elections that were marred with allegations of fraud. Since then there have been protests against Ali Bongo’s rule with both sides accusing each other of electoral fraud/corruption leading to violence between protesters and security forces. In 2019 there were further protests against perceived government corruption resulting in further violence between protesters and security forces resulting in at least nine deaths according to Human Rights Watch reports. Despite these issues Gabon remains one of Africa’s most prosperous countries thanks to its oil wealth which has enabled it to build a strong infrastructure including roads, ports, airports etc., develop its education system as well as health care system which are among the best on the continent according to WHO reports. In 2010, Gabon was a prosperous and modern country. Its economy was strong and the standard of living was high. Its people enjoyed a life expectancy of 60 years, which was above the average for the African continent. Gabon had an advanced education system and highly skilled workforce, making it an attractive destination for foreign investment. The country also boasted a rich cultural heritage, with many museums, galleries and festivals celebrating its history and traditions. Additionally, Gabon had some of the most beautiful landscapes in Africa, from lush rainforests to pristine beaches along its coastline. It also had strong connections to other countries around the world through its membership in both the African Union (AU) and OPEC. All these factors combined to make Gabon an attractive destination for tourists from around the globe. Check ethnicityology for Gabon in 2018.
