According to localcollegeexplorer, Eritrea is a country located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. It is one of the world’s youngest countries and is made up of nine ethnic groups. Eritrea has a long and complex history that dates back thousands of years. The region was initially inhabited by Cushitic-speaking people who were later joined by Semitic-speaking people from the Arabian Peninsula around 1000 BC. The area was part of the Kingdom of Aksum in the 4th century AD, which was an important trading center between Europe and Asia. In 1520, it was conquered by Ottoman Turks and became part of their empire until 1885 when Italy colonized it as part of its African empire. In 1941, during World War II, British forces occupied Eritrea and administered it as a United Nations Trust Territory until 1952 when it became an autonomous region within Ethiopia under an agreement known as the Federation Agreement. This agreement lasted until 1962 when Ethiopia annexed Eritrea following a UN-supervised referendum that saw 99% vote for independence from Ethiopia. This led to a 30-year long war between Eritrean rebels and Ethiopian forces that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths before finally ending in 1991 when Eritrean rebels defeated Ethiopian forces and declared independence from Ethiopia on May 24th 1993 after a UN-supervised referendum where 98% voted for independence from Ethiopia. Since then, Eritrea has faced many challenges including drought, famine, poverty, human rights abuses, political repression as well as economic mismanagement leading to economic decline for many citizens. Despite these challenges however, Eritrea has seen some progress in recent years with improved infrastructure such as roads and airports as well as increased access to education and healthcare services thanks to government initiatives aimed at improving living standards throughout the country while also promoting economic development through foreign investment opportunities.
