According to localcollegeexplorer, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a Central African nation located along the equator. It is bordered by nine other countries, including Tanzania, Angola, Zambia and Uganda. The DRC covers an area of 2.3 million square miles and is home to an estimated population of over 80 million people. The history of the DRC dates back to ancient times when it was inhabited by Bantu-speaking peoples. The area was later colonized by the Belgians in 1885 and became known as the Belgian Congo. Unfortunately, Lumumba was overthrown in 1961 by Mobutu Sese Seko who proceeded to rule with an iron fist until 1997 when Laurent-Desire Kabila overthrew him with help from Rwanda and Uganda. Kabila then declared himself president of the newly formed Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Kabila’s rule was marked by political unrest as various rebel groups rose up against him while civil war raged on in the eastern part of the country due to ethnic tensions between Hutus and Tutsis. In 2003, a power-sharing agreement was reached between Kabila and four opposition parties which ended much of this violence but did not bring about any lasting peace or stability for the nation. In 2006, elections were held which saw Joseph Kabila become president after his father’s death earlier that year. Since then, he has continued to lead a mostly peaceful government despite occasional bouts of violence stemming from rebel groups or ethnic tensions between Hutus and Tutsis in certain regions such as North Kivu province. Today, while there are still many challenges facing DRC such as poverty, corruption, poor infrastructure and poor healthcare services; it has made some progress towards becoming a more stable nation with a growing economy that is slowly improving living conditions for its citizens. In 2010, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was a Central African country located in the heart of Africa and was home to around 68 million people. It had a struggling economy with a GDP per capita estimated at around $400. The DRC’s economy relied heavily on mining, forestry, and agricultural products which accounted for about one-third of its export revenue.
