According to localcollegeexplorer, Chad is a landlocked nation in Central Africa, bordered by Libya, Sudan, the Central African Republic (CAR), Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. The country has a rich cultural history and was once part of the Kanem-Bornu Empire which was one of the largest empires in Africa from the 9th to 19th centuries. In 1900, Chad was colonized by France and became an autonomous republic within the French Community in 1958. In 1960, Chad gained full independence from France and François Tombalbaye became its first president. However, Tombalbaye was overthrown in 1975 by General Felix Malloum who was then replaced by General Hissene Habre in 1982 who ruled until 1990 when he was overthrown by Idriss Deby Itno. Deby has been president ever since and is currently serving his fifth term. Throughout its history, Chad has faced numerous political upheavals as well as civil wars due to ongoing ethnic tensions between various groups such as the Arab-Muslim north and Christian-animist south. In recent years however, there have been some attempts at peace building with a number of international agreements signed aimed at maintaining stability within the country such as the Darfur Peace Agreement of 2006 between Chad and Sudan which ended decades of conflict along their shared border. Today Chad continues to struggle with poverty and political unrest but is slowly making progress towards economic development with increased foreign investment from abroad helping to boost its economy. Despite these challenges however, Chad remains an important player in regional affairs thanks to its strategic location at the crossroads of central Africa while also providing a safe haven for refugees fleeing violence in neighboring countries such as Sudan or CAR. In 2010, Chad was located in Central Africa, bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, Cameroon and the Central African Republic (CAR) to the south and Niger to the west. It had a population of around 11 million people and was one of the poorest countries in Africa with its GDP per capita estimated at around $700. Its economy relied heavily on agriculture which employed over 80% of its population as well as oil production which accounted for about 10% of its GDP. In 2010, Chad was experiencing a period of political instability due to a long-running civil war between government forces and rebel groups which had been ongoing since 2005. This conflict had caused a humanitarian crisis in Chad with millions displaced from their homes and thousands killed or injured. In addition, Chad’s infrastructure had been severely damaged by the war making it difficult for aid agencies to deliver much needed assistance. Despite this instability, Chad remained an attractive destination for tourists looking to explore its vibrant culture or experience its unique wildlife such as cheetahs that lived along its coastlines or giraffes that roamed through its savannahs. The country also boasted some of Africa’s most stunning natural landscapes such as Lake Chad and Tibesti Massif which were popular among adventurers looking for adventure holidays.
