It has a long and storied history that dates back to the arrival of the first Europeans in the late 15th century. The first permanent French settlement in Canada was established at Port Royal, Nova Scotia in 1605. The English followed shortly after and established their own colonies across what is now Canada. This led to several wars between the two nations, culminating in the French surrender of New France to Britain in 1763. In 1867, three British colonies were united into a single dominion called Canada with its capital at Ottawa. Since then, Canada has grown steadily as it welcomed immigrants from around the world and expanded its borders to include what are now British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland & Labrador. In 1982, the Constitution Act was passed by Parliament which granted full sovereignty to Canada from Britain with an independent Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Today, Canada is a well-developed nation with a stable political system and strong economy that continues to attract immigrants from around the world looking for better opportunities for their families. Despite its relatively small population of just over 37 million people spread out over an area larger than Europe combined, Canada remains one of the most prosperous countries on earth with strong ties to both Europe and North America ensuring its continued success for years to come. Canada was a North American country located in 2010 between the United States to the south and the Arctic Ocean to the north. It had a population of around 33 million people and had achieved considerable economic progress since its founding in 1867 due to increased foreign investment, improved infrastructure and the exploitation of its natural resources such as oil, timber and minerals. Despite this progress, poverty remained a major challenge in Canada with nearly 15% of its population living below the poverty line. In 2010, Canada’s GDP per capita was estimated at around $41,000 which placed it amongst one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Its economy relied heavily on services which accounted for around two-thirds of its GDP and provided employment for over half of its population. Other important sectors included manufacturing, oil production, timber harvesting and mining. The political situation in Canada remained largely stable throughout 2010 due to its vibrant civil society which actively participated in politics through protests or campaigns for greater transparency from officials at all levels. Despite these challenges, Canada still remained an attractive destination for tourists looking to explore its vibrant culture or experience its unique wildlife such as polar bears that lived along its coastlines or moose that roamed through its forests.
