From 1979 to 1989, Cambodia was under Communist rule led by Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime which resulted in one of the worst genocides of modern times with an estimated two million people killed or dying from starvation or overwork. In 1989, Vietnam withdrew from Cambodia after 10 years of occupation and a United Nations-sponsored election took place in 1993 resulting in Norodom Sihanouk’s return to power as king until his retirement in 2004 when he was succeeded by his son King Sihamoni. Since then, Cambodia has been slowly rebuilding itself with foreign aid from countries such as Japan, China, Australia and the US helping to improve infrastructure as well as educational initiatives for its citizens. Today it is still considered one of the poorest countries in Asia but is gradually developing economically due to increased investment from abroad which has helped spur growth over recent years while maintaining stability within its borders. Access to basic social services like health care and education also remained limited due to inadequate infrastructure or resources. To address this issue, the government implemented several programs such as free primary education and free public health care services for all citizens regardless of their income level or social status. The political situation in Cambodia remained largely stable throughout 2010 due to its vibrant civil society which actively participated in politics through protests or campaigns for greater transparency from officials at all levels.
