According to localcollegeexplorer, Botswana is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa. It shares borders with Zimbabwe, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia. The country gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966 and since then it has become one of the most stable democracies in Africa. The pre-colonial history of Botswana dates back to the Stone Age when hunter-gatherers inhabited the region. Later, during the Iron Age, Bantu-speaking tribes migrated into the region and established small kingdoms such as those of Tswana and Kalanga. These kingdoms were later conquered by larger ones such as those of Ndebele, Matabele (Zimbabwe) and Afrikaner (South Africa). In 1885, Bechuanaland became a British protectorate under Cecil Rhodes’ British South Africa Company. In 1895, it was renamed Bechuanaland Protectorate and was administered by Britain until 1966 when it gained full independence as Botswana with Seretse Khama as its first president. Since independence in 1966, Botswana has developed into a stable democracy with one of the fastest growing economies in the world due to its abundance of diamonds. The government has invested heavily in education and health infrastructure while also providing free primary education to all citizens which has resulted in high literacy rates among adults today (87%). Botswana is also known for its commitment to conservation as over 30% of its land is designated for wildlife conservation including national parks like Chobe National Park which is home to some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife species such as elephants, lions, cheetahs and more. Today Botswana is an emerging middle-income nation that has experienced strong economic growth since gaining independence over fifty years ago with GDP per capita increasing from $521 USD per year at independence to $7,671 USD per year today according to World Bank figures. This growth has been driven by diamond mining but also tourism which brings over 700 thousand tourists each year who come to experience some of Botswana’s unique attractions such as its national parks and safaris. Botswana is a country located in Southern Africa, bordered by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. In 2010, Botswana had an area of around 581,730 square kilometers and a population of around 2 million people. The capital city was Gaborone which had a population of around 230,000 people in 2010. The official language spoken in Botswana is English but there are also several other languages spoken such as Setswana and Kalanga. The currency used at that time was called the Pula (BWP) but South African Rand were also accepted in many places too. Botswana’s economy was largely based on mining which accounted for around 33% of GDP in 2010 and included activities such as diamond production due to its vast natural resources such as minerals, natural gas and coal reserves. In addition to this there had also been an increase focus on developing industry within Botswana itself such as manufacturing during this period too. In terms of culture, Botswana has always been proud of its rich cultural heritage which includes traditional music from both indigenous cultures as well as traditional dances such as Ntsu which are still popular today. Religion is an important part of life for many people with most practicing Christianity but there is also significant representation from other religions within the country’s population too. Botswanan culture has been heavily influenced by British colonialism with many festivals celebrated throughout the year including Dikgafela (the first day of the new year) and Setswalo (the first harvest festival).
