The Seattle Museum of Asian Art is located on the grounds of Volunteer Park, in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. It is a branch of the Seattle Art Museum and occupies a building built in 1933 in the Art Nouveau (late Art Deco) style. This building was designed by Carl F. Gould of the well-known architecture firm Bebb & Gould and originally housed the main collection of the Art Museum. In 1991, it was moved to a purpose-built building in downtown, and in 1994 the Museum of Asian Art opened in the building.

The museum’s collections include samples of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Himalayan art, as well as the art of Southeast Asia. In addition to the value of its collection, the museum also boasts a very good location. Directly opposite is the Volunteer Park Conservatory, where you can see a wonderful collection of tropical plants distributed over five rooms: the Bromeliad House, the Palm House, the Fern House, the Seasonal Collections House and the Cactus House. Entrance to the greenhouse is free, and since the Museum of Asian Art is not at all large, you can easily inspect both it and the greenhouse in the morning, and even sunbathe on the lawn – and still leave the park in time for lunch.

The museum has a charming Sam Shop where you can buy a variety of Asian goods and books about Asian culture and art.

It is worth noting that the Volunteer Park is one of the oldest in Seattle, and this is clearly seen from the diameter of the tree trunks. Many of the rhododendron bushes here are over a hundred years old.

Another noteworthy detail is a sculpture that stands on a hill in front of the museum building. This is the work of Isamu Noguchi, which is called “Black Sun”. It serves as a beautiful natural frame for admiring the Space Needle, Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

And those who are not afraid of climbing the 106 steps that lead to the top of the old park water tower will be rewarded with excellent views of the city.

Opening hours: the museum is open from Friday to Sunday and Wednesday from 10:00 to 17:00, on Thursday from 10:00 to 21:00. Monday and Tuesday are days off.

Entrance: USD 25 for adults, USD 18 for visitors over 62, USD 15 for students (ID required) and visitors aged 13-19. For children under 12 years old – free admission.

On the first Thursday of each month, admission to the museum is free for everyone, on the first Saturday – for families, on the first Friday – for visitors over 62 years old. On the second Thursday of the month – free admission from 17:00 to 21:00.
