Test: Eee Pad Transformer Tablet from Asus

The Transformer has excellent features of hardware, both of your “part” of your tablet “netbook”.

By Daniel Pavani

Earlier this month, the ASUS presented in Sao Paulo the new models that tablets that was launching, as well as the models that should reach Brazil, and the Transformer is one of them. In addition to the latest version of Android Honeycomb, the tablet has an excellent accessory, which transforms it into a hybrid between tablet and netbook via AblogtoPhone, the Eee Station.

Transformer settings are respect, with a 10.1 LED screen “with IPS technology, which allows up to 178 degrees viewing angle and two cameras, with 1, 2MP front and rear at 5MP. The tablet runs Android Honeycomb 3.2, powered by a NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and 1 GB of RAM. An important highlight is the battery, which promises to last for 9.5 hours, up to 16 hours with the Eee Station.

The agility of the Android 3.2 is really very good. When compared with a Motorola XOOM (not yet updated and in version 3.0), it is a slightly faster and the arrival of the resizable widgets is really very welcome. And, of course, applications to the Gtalk and Gmail in the Honeycomb are beautiful.

To provide a good integration between the physical and virtual keyboards, ASUS has created a specific virtual keyboard and other than the default of Android. However, he already has the number keys on a new row of keys, which can be a good once you get used to it. However, those who already are accustomed to keyboards of tablets, like the XOOM, Motorola, and the iPad, Apple, you will feel a little difficult to use a virtual keyboard with keys so tight.

As a result of your aspect ratio, as well as the XOOM, it’s quite uncomfortable to use the Transformer in portrait position. Don’t hinder anything, really, not only provides an experience as good as the iPad in this position, for example.

ASUS has added some applications still interesting in your owners Waveshare modification of Android. The MyCloud and the MyContent are cloud storage services, photos, music or any type of document. The MyDesktop provides the screen sharing Mac or PC directly on the screen of the tablet and MyNet facilitates the DLNA network configuration and management. On the multimedia, there is the @Vibe, an app for streaming music, videos and radio, MyLibrary, for reading ebooks and newspapers and games from Nvidia, Tegra Zone.

Without doubt the Eee Station is the main feature of the Eee Pad Transformer and your dock really earned the fame that has. The attachment provides a physical keyboard to tablet and a touchpad, plus USB ports, SD memory card readers and more than 6 hours of battery life. An excellent initiative from ASUS is selling the dock separately, which represents a chance not to “arrest” the consumer for a particular configuration.

Use the physical keyboard of Eee Station is easy and natural, with the only “disadvantage” to be a keyboard much more tight than notebooks; However, who’s used to netbooks and tablets keyboard should not feel much difficulty. It has Android system keys, such as Home, Back and search, which greatly facilitates the use of the set. Still, an interesting feature is that to do a search or it is necessary to click the icon or press the key, simply enter and search is done immediately.

One of the problems of the use of the dock just in time of docking or undocking the accessory on tablet. If this was done with a game running, for example the Angry Birds, the game always was finalized. The trackpad, much as many people may even find it interesting, just missing a little the need on a tablet. It’s much more complicated to go with the trackpak cursor to the location of the screen on which the user wants to play, that really touch on the screen. However, this component can be useful for most tiresome, as for example who works with text and must reposition the cursor again and again, for example.

When mated to the dock, the set gives a different feel for who is used to working with notebooks or netbooks. These laptops have your heaviest on your base and not on the screen, which is unlike the set Transformer. As the tablet takes place of the screen, this part is heavier than the base, and the user will have to get used to a different kind of balance – anything that’s a big problem, however.

One of the most important highlights of the EES Station are the more hours of battery provided by own dock. So, if the user is using the tablet alone and the battery is running low, just that he connects to the dock and have a few more hours of work – or fun.

* USB port, card reader and extra battery in the dock

Cons

* Bugs in time to dock the tablet in the dock

* Virtual keyboard from ASUS too tight and confused
