How to Deal With Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

Sexual harassment in the workplace is an act of abuse of power that implies a sexual act and can be punished by the law. Recently we have seen more and more complaints of these harassment cases, some quite newsworthy, but we know little about their characteristics and the consequences that may have for the victims.

Each time, more cases of sexual harassment in the workplace have been public. The harassment may be rooted in psychological or sexual, and it translates into a set of behaviors perceived as abusive with the purpose of intimidating, coercing, or threaten the dignity.

TO UNDERSTAND THE PHENOMENON OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE

  • Promote the isolation or lack of contact with work colleagues or supervisors;
  • Setting goals impossible to achieve;
  • Depreciation the systematic of the work;
  • Functions that are inappropriate;
  • Systemic threats of dismissal;
  • Humiliation because of the physical features, psychological or other.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Constitutes an offense against the dignity of the individual worker, because the right to sexual freedom is an expression of the right to intimacy and private life. Is born from the relationship of domination and aims to get a conduct specific desired by the perpetrator.

Set of unwanted behaviors perceived as abusive, such as for example:

  • Attempts physical contact disturbing;
  • Physical contact is not desired (touching, moving, grabbing, groping, kissing or attempting to kiss);
  • Assault or attempted sexual assault;
  • Requests for sexual favors associated with promises of obtaining employment, or improving working conditions;
  • Blackmail, and even use of force or strategy of coercion of the will of the other person;
  • Jokes or offensive comments about appearance, body or sexual character;
  • Invitations to unwanted encounters;
  • Proposals explicit and unwanted sexual nature;
  • Phone calls, letters, sms, e-mails or images of a sexual nature to be offensive;
  • Looks slippery;
  • Questions intrusive and offensive about the private life.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PERPETRATORS AND VICTIMS

The practice of harassment imply a difference of power between the person harassed and the person who harasses. The situation most often involves the dependency relationships among subordinates and supervisors but also, can happen between colleagues, for example when someone wants to dispute the place of another colleague and seeks to denigrate systematically its image before the superiors.

The victims, mostly women, feel, many confused by the behavior of his superior, who initially seemed to be very friendly. However, in cases of harassment, with the passing of time the behavior friendly it becomes increasingly inappropriate and uncomfortable.

The behaviors start off subtle so that the victim becomes confused and did not report the situation. Victims of sexual harassment in the workplace feel confused, insecure, ashamed, powerless to defend themselves, and imprisoned by the situation. Victims who resist harassment or complain, may be subject to threats, such as, for example, the denial of a promotion, which often inhibits that the complaint is made.

No one should feel ashamed for being the victim of sexual harassment in the workplace. The shame is for those whose conduct is improper, not to the victim. Feeling shame causes people to not take action and allow the harassment to keep it, and that other victims follow.

It is essential the commitment of the employer and of workers in the creation of a work environment without violence, without abuse and without harassment. To do this, it is important to be defined what types of actions are not permissible, what are the consequences and sanctions and how the victims can get help.
