10 Myths and Misconceptions about the Omega Speedmaster Professional

The Omega Speedmaster Professional was not only the first watch on the moon but is also regarded as the most tested timepiece in the world. It is surprising that perhaps the most famous of all chronographs is the object of numerous myths and errors.

Myth 1: In A Bidding Process, Omega Won A Sponsorship Agreement Against Its Competitors.

To this day, the persistent rumor holds that Omega was making payments to NASA at the time, so that the Apollo 11 mission would choose the services of Speedmaster Professioinal. In fact, however, the running characteristics and the robustness of the watch were the only factors that were decisive in extreme conditions.

Myth 2: Neil Armstrong Made The Speedmaster Professional The “First Watch Worn On The Moon”.

As Neil Armstrong was known to be the first man on the moon, the assumption is that he was the one who made the Omega Speedmaster Professional the first time on the moon according to homethodology.com. In fact, Buzz Aldrin helped Omega to this myth, as Neil Armstrong left his copy because of a machine defect in the spaceship capsule.

Myth 3: The Speedmaster Professional By Buzz Aldrin Was A Reference 145.012.

It is often assumed that a Speedmaster Professional with reference 145.012 became the first watch on the moon. Even if the reference 145.012 had already been launched at the time of the moon landing, Buzz Aldrin’s timepiece was the previous model 105.012. It is quite possible that this myth has contributed to the fact that the original copy has not been re-emerged to this day.

Myth 4: The Omega Speedmaster Professional Was Developed Specifically For NASA’s Lunar Mission.

Even though the Omega Speedmaster Professional became the first watch on the moon on July 20, 1969, it was produced years before. Initially under the name Speedmaster and then as Speedmaster Professional. The reference, which was used for the first time on the surface of the moon, had already been launched in 1963 and was not actually produced at the time of the moon landing.

Myth 5: The Crew Of Apollo 11 Was Also Asked To Carry The Watches As They Left The Capsule.

Since the Speedys were just as much an official piece of equipment as an aerospace suit and boots, it is probable that the clocks, according to NASA’s instructions, should not be dropped for the time during the moon landing. It is true, however, that the crew was free to choose whether they should wear their Speedys during the landing or not. For Buzz Aldrin as a self-employed watchmaker, however, it was clear that the watch would also not leave his wrist during his moonwalk.

Myth 6: The Watch Movement Omega 321, Built In Early Speedmaster References (Including Reference 105.012), Is A Completely In-House Developed And Produced Movement.

In fact, the Omega 321 is the result of a working group with the factory producer Lemania, dating back to the 1940s. The clockwork, which from the project “27 CHRO C12” hervorging is designated Lemania as caliber 2310. By the name of the caliber in 2872, the work was also used in chronographs by Patek Philippe.

Myth 7: On All Models, Which Were Produced After The Mondlandung 1969, One Finds The Marking “First Watch Worn On The Moon” On The Case Cover.

The successful Apollomission received from 1969 with the signature First Watch Worn on the Moon on the case floor of the Speedmaster Professional recognition and the designation Moonwatch was born. However, there are also numerous models without this marking, although they were produced after the moon landing. This is due to the fact that at the time of the Mondmission Apollo 11 some individual housings were stored before they were installed without engraving. A lack of the lettering for models produced after the moon landing therefore does not necessarily have to speak for an incorrect housing cover or even allow conclusions to be drawn about the presence of a fake.

Myth 8: Pre-Moon Or Pre-Moonwatch Is A Production Date That Dates Back To The Time Of The First Moon Landing.

In the case of the informal term Pre-Moon, the Moonwatches refers to models that do not have the famous First Watch Worn on the Moon lettering on the case cover. Since, as just described, the references produced after the moon landing are not equipped with such an engraving, it is sometimes the case that after the moon landing, watches are also known as pre-moon or pre-moonwatches.

Myth 9: There Are No Differences Between The Speedmaster Professional And Hesalite Glass And The One With Sapphire Glass.

Apart from the fact that the version with sapphire glass – unlike those with Plexiglas – has a viewing glass base, differences can also be observed with regard to the housing top. On the one hand, due to the different material characteristics, the plexiglass is supported by that of the sapphire glass. On the other hand, the curvature at the edge of the plexiglass is somewhat rounded compared to that of the sapphire glass. Due to the different mounting, it is also not possible to convert sapphire glass to plexiglas (or vice versa).

Myth 10: The Current Speedmaster Professional Is Identical To Its Predecessor And Has Only Changed With Regard To The Scope Of Delivery.

The new Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with the reference 311.30.42.30.01.005 has changed with regard to the scope of delivery compared to its predecessor with the reference 3750.50.00. However, minor changes were also made to the watch. Thus, the current version is presented with an improved fastening of the bracelet, in which a screw closure is used instead of the previous plug pins.
